Arrival to Paris! | Denver Portrait Photographer

Stay present

I can't believe that I'm really here and writing to all of you from PARIS!!!!!! This trip has been a dream of mine for a long time now, and the time has finally arrived!!! It's ironic, though that the more you build up to something you're truly excited about, the more stress can grow over the anticipation. I was reminded of this the morning I left for Paris.

Half packed.

Half packed.

It takes me forever to do anything. It just does. But somehow, packing for Paris took an UNUSUALLY long time. Some of Maggie's outfits have lots of volume, and no amount of squishing or cramming could seem to make it easier to fit everything in easily. It took so long to pack the wardrobe, then eventually my own things, that I started running out of time. And to make matters worse, my back started acting up. I have been prone to back spasms before and between lifting my suitcases and tons of tension/stress, my back started threatening to go into spasm. This slowed things down even more and suddenly I was sure I would miss my flight.

Somehow I finished

Somehow I finished

I arrived to the airport filled with anxiety. In my Lyft I had attempted to change my flight to a later one to give me time to breathe and had done so unsuccessfully. And during the process of trying to change things unsuccessfully, I was charged $150. Upon trying to check in I was directed to a different desk where I would be assisted in straightening things out. A woman who I will call "Shirley" waved me over and asked how I was doing.

"I'm having a day."

I explained everything that happened, so far and Shirley got to typing. Within a few minutes she looked up and said that she had refunded me the $150. And of course, I started crying softly in gratitude. She then worked on re-booking me, as I had missed the window to check my bags. I told her that my fiancé had a certain status with the airline, in case that made a difference. It didn't. But that's where the fun began.

"Soooo. When is the big day?!"

She then took my hand and her eyes lit up when she saw my engagement ring. She told me a story about her wedding day. She pulled out her phone and showed me photos from a family wedding so I could see a potential venue in Colorado. She gave me the advice to make sure we are doing things OUR way, and not for anybody else. And when a man started huffing and puffing behind me, she quickly sent him to a different desk. Then went back to showing me her camera roll.

It was comical in many ways, having this conversation in front of other people waiting. It was like a scene out of a movie or a sketch from SNL, for sure! But it was also a gift. Truly. Because up until that moment, all that I had in my head was that I was a failure for not packing days in advance...for not taking care of my back all week. And while I'm often scattered on days where I fly (I prefer road trips), it's rare for me to actually miss a flight. What Shirley did was get my energy grounded. She completely calmed me down. She brought my attention back to what matters most: the people I love. She reminded me how refreshing it is to genuinely connect with a stranger and exchange true friendliness. And she knew that she could get me on a different flight without doing it frantically. I was genuinely touched by her kindness...and it reminded me to stay present.

A sea of tulle

My two flights were great. Side note to Nathan: I attempted to not fart on the plane. Not sure it happened. And I DID try using the bathroom, but what you did NOT say is that people would be knocking on the door due to impatience. But I digress.

Try not to fart.

Try not to fart.

The pilot promised fine dining, and fine dining we received!

The pilot promised fine dining, and fine dining we received!

I landed in Paris. The officers were searching lots of people that day, and when they decided to go through my luggage they were a bit amused at all the dresses and accessories that I packed for Maggie to wear. I think they were hoping to find drugs, but they obviously did not. All that was in my bag was an innocent sea of endless tulle. The two officers cracked some jokes under their breath as they handed me back my suitcases. I'm sure it made interesting discussion over dinner with their families that night. Happy to be of help.

Henri

Just a Mercedes-Benz. No big deal.

Just a Mercedes-Benz. No big deal.

I have never stayed in an AirBnb before, nor have I needed to take an Uber by myself in Europe before. When Martin and I visited Paris in January, our first Uber driver spoke almost no English, so I was worried it might happen again. Luckily, I had the very best Uber driver in Paris pick me up...and in a Mercedes-Benz! Henri was my Uber driver that day and so incredibly helpful. He gave me all kinds of tips for where to go with Maggie, as well as what parts of France to visit other than Paris in the future. He also warned me about pick-pocketing and where to be the most careful. We arrived to the apartment way faster than I thought it would take and before I knew it, I was all checked in and waiting for Martin.

Pamplemousse Juice

Martin arrived from Ireland a few hours later. He was able to visit my (soon to be) in-laws and will also head to London (jealous) after we finish up in Paris. Once we were both settled, we decided to check out a local grocery store in hopes of eating at least some meals at home.

French fruit, obviously.

French fruit, obviously.

Neither Martin or I speak French, aside from my ballet terminology and anything I can sort of remember from high school (sorry Monsieur Tabegna...you were the most amusing teacher ever, but I really just didn't pay attention) so while some things in the store were easy to identify, others we had more trouble with.

Martin had no problem identifying this, however.

Martin had no problem identifying this, however.

Everyone knows that you should never go grocery shopping when you're hungry. Martin did better than I picking up healthy things. But I went right for every dessert I could find. And juice. We now have a refrigerator with every kind of juice. But if you want grapefruit juice, you're out of luck and here's why:

"I'm getting this one, as well."

"I thought you didn't like grapefruit juice?"

"Ew. I don't."

"Soooo....why did you get it?"

"I didn't."

"You did."

"Martin...pamplemousse means "PEAR"."

"Mark. There's a photograph of a grapefruit on the front."

"Ok...but...well....I just thought maybe....maybe that is what a French pear looks like..."

"................................................"

"Fine. I'm not getting this, I've just decided. Carry on."

And that's why you won't find grapefruit juice in our Paris refrigerator.

Early bedtime/Early rainstorm

I think I can, I think I can, I think I...

I think I can, I think I can, I think I...

...nope.

...nope.

Martin and I planned to go have a gorgeous dinner out in Paris and maybe see the old Eiffel Tower (as one does), but we were both exhausted after a long day of travel. We headed to bed way earlier than I imagined on night one, but it was a relief for my back to finally be in a bed. When I woke up prior to sunrise, it was raining quite heavily...perfect for blogging...and luckily the rest of our trip should be dry!

As I'm writing this, Maggie is hours away from leaving for the airport!!! In the meantime we are going to location scout, eat pastries, but not drink grapefruit juice. Or for that matter, pear.

See you tomorrow.

Au Revoir Denver!!! | Denver Portrait Photographer

Please cooperate, Sun

I still get butterflies.

I still get butterflies.

As I mentioned in my previous blog, the replica Dior Bar Suit arrived with just enough time to do a test shoot with Maggie. I thought it would be a great chance for us to both warm up to our new roles of photographer and subject. Frankly speaking, I still get butterflies before every single shoot. I keep waiting for it to go away and it never does. I'm always worried that I will arrive to a portrait session and suddenly lose my ability to take a photograph. But luckily for my clients, my nerves have never stopped me from creating something incredible for them.

Although my Denver portrait sessions always include professional hair and makeup, I asked Maggie to do her own since it was just a test shoot. As she started getting ready, I started preparing my studio for her portrait to be taken. And by studio, I do mean house. If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know that over 90% of my work is created outdoors with the sun. But on rare occasions, I stay indoors and use a combination of the sun, studio lighting and a backdrop. On the day of Maggie's test shoot, it was overcast. Usually this would be a gift from the photography gods because the light outside would be soft and diffused. But I wanted to do the test shoot inside since we will be outside for much of Maggie's dream experience in Paris.

The time drew close to Maggie's arrival and the sunlight from the window was still a bit too dim. Martin was acting as my assistant that day and together we decided it might be best to move the backdrop outdoors. We pulled all of the equipment outdoors to our backyard and just as we had settled on a perfect spot and height for the backdrop, the clouds moved...and out came the sun in its full glory.

Most people think that the best time to take photographs is when the sun is brightest. Uh-uh. It's the worst. Don't believe me? The next time it's about 12 noon and it's a sunny day, step outside with a friend and look at their face. Unless you're in open shade, you'll notice that your friend's face is covered in harsh and unflattering shadows. Often midday sun produces what photographers refer to as "raccoon eyes", where the eyes cannot be seen as anything but gigantic dark circles.

Gorgeous midday light.

Gorgeous midday light.

So yeah. We moved everything inside.

Testing things out

We relocated just in time for Maggie's arrival. The sun from the window I was relying on still wasn't quite strong enough alone, so as Maggie got changed I pulled out a studio light. In a portrait, it's very important that the face is well lit and that a catchlight in the eye can be seen. Of course rules are often broken in photography, but that is what I aim for.

Testing the light on the backdrop once it was moved inside.

Maggie emerged from my office and I truly felt like my Dior Barbie had come to life. Yes, I have a Dior Barbie and yes she wears a Bar Suit. Good news, kids! When you grow up, you can buy whatever the hell you want!!!

I'm a Barbie girl at heart. Always have been, always will be.

I'm a Barbie girl at heart. Always have been, always will be.

Seriously, though...looking at Maggie...I was just completely transported back to a different time.

Jardin du Luxembourg?

The test shoot went great! Maggie photographs so beautifully and it made me even more excited for Paris! After she left, I tried to create some organization in my usually tidy office, which was COVERED in wardrobe for Paris. I started making lists for each portrait session that will take place once we are in France, mostly to keep track of which accessory goes with which outfit. And to start visualizing what each shoot might look like.

That's when it occurred to me: I hadn't heard back from the Jardin du Luxembourg.

Back in April I started doing research on the Jardin. As you may recall, I fell in love with the location when we visited Paris in January. I also saw Vera Wang do a photoshoot there and became even more inspired. But I wondered if a permit was needed to photograph there. Since it's a public park, my first thought was no. And my first thought was wrong.

A friend of mine from high school now lives in France. He is completely fluent in French, so I asked a favor of him. He contacted the right people on my behalf and came back with some news: as a government building is in view when you photograph at the Jardin du Luxembourg, you absolutely have to have a permit to do a professional photo shoot. She gave him a list of things I had to reply with to obtain the permit, including why I had to photograph at the Jardin and not somewhere else. No pressure.

Using Google Translate, I composed a clumsy letter and sent it. That was back in April. They never wrote back.

Worth the risk?

I started contacting other photographers from around the world who had done photoshoots at the Jardin. None had a permit. But most were eventually asked to leave. This made me uncomfortable. I didn't want to put a whole plan in place, including the perfect outfit, only to be kicked out by the Jardin staff moments after arriving. I photographed Martin back in January because I didn't know I couldn't do so, and we didn't get kicked out. But were we just lucky?

Martin loves his trees.

Martin loves his trees.

So I'm still wondering: is it worth the risk? Should I just take a chance and try photographing Maggie at the spot that I promised myself I would come back to this year? Or should I write again and ask for permission? What if they refuse? Or what if a permit is insanely expensive???

Moments before boarding my flight to Paris! Proceeded by one very crazy morning. I'll tell you the story tomorrow ;)

Moments before boarding my flight to Paris! Proceeded by one very crazy morning. I'll tell you the story tomorrow ;)

I just don't know what to do and I suppose you'll find out with me after I arrive to Paris. Which, by the way, is in a few hours!!! That's right!!! I am writing this from my laptop on the airplane (merci airplane wi-fi) and I will land in Paris before most of Denver wakes up!!! Ahhhh!!!!! It's finally here!!!

Sneak peek

So how does the replica Dior Bar Suit photograph? Well, I'll let you be the judge of that. Here is Maggie on the day of her test shoot, looking more gorgeous than I could have ever imagined!!!!

Feet of flames | Denver Portrait Photographer

Designer for less

The older I've gotten, the more I appreciate luxury. I used to look down upon people who spent what I thought was excessive money on things. But as I started building my own brand, I realized that the products that I felt attracted to and started selecting for my clients were often higher priced. And frankly, they were way better made and built to stand the test of time. Over the last couple of years I've seen the appreciation for well-constructed things amongst my own clients, whose eyes light up when holding my sample products for the first time at their consultation.

Every package I offer includes a gorgeous folio box of matted prints, customized for each client.

Every package I offer includes a gorgeous folio box of matted prints, customized for each client.

The more I've fallen in love with my own luxury products, the more I've fallen in love with luxury brands. And so when looking for a pair of black stilettos for Maggie to wear (as she didn't have any), I obviously thought of one brand: Christian Louboutin. But guess what? After all the other wardrobe was purchased? Not in the budget!!!

Sole mates

I swallowed my first world pride and ordered some much cheaper shoes. They still looked nice, but I knew they wouldn't be designer. Then one night I was browsing Youtube and found a tutorial on how to make ordinary shoes look designer. It turns out that there is a paint that's perfectly color matched to the famous red soles of Christian Louboutin shoes, and a glaze to go with it! Um, sign me up!!! Hashtag DIY.

The heels before...

The heels before...

...and after the red paint.

...and after the red paint.

The paint, glaze and shoes are a match made in heaven!! It took lots of coats (incidentally I recommend doing many THIN coats as I put it on too thick) and tons of patience, but I'm totally happy with the result!!! Don't you think they will look just fabulous on Maggie as she walks the streets of Paris?!

The final result, including the glaze! Oh and don't mind the suitcase. Just packing for Paris ;)

The Bar Suit arrives

Just as Charlene promised, the Bar Suit arrived in time. And oh my God, when I first held it...and then put it on a mannequin to steam...it was like I was transported back to Paris in 1947. At this point, Maggie had tried on pretty much everything else. But I now needed her to try on the Bar Suit, praying that it would fit. And that's when I got the idea to do a test shoot with the Bar Suit before leaving! Maggie is a professional dancer, not a professional model (Almost none of my clients are)...and we had never worked together. So it seemed like a great idea.

Preparing for Paris | Denver Portrait Photographer

In just a few days, I will go from being a Denver Portrait Photographer to a Paris Portrait Photographer! But don't worry...I'm not moving ;)

Setting my vision

About a year ago, a business mentor challenged me to create a dream photography experience. It took me two seconds to figure out what I wanted it to be: a destination portrait session, giving everyday women the ultimate fashion experience. And I wanted to start in Paris. The trouble was, I had no idea how to make it happen. But I kept reminding myself that I didn't need to focus on HOW...I needed to focus on the end result and have lots and lots of faith.

At the end of 2017, I wrote the goal out on my iPhone: I will travel to Paris in 2018. Unbeknownst to me, it would happen sooner than I thought! In January 2018 when my fiancé and I were visiting his family in London, I realized that we could get to Paris by train and FAST! We boarded the Eurostar and I believe we were walking the streets of Paris a little over two hours later!!!

Denver-Family-and-Portrait-Photographer-Trip-to-Paris-January-2018-Watermarked-6.JPG

Although we were only there a day and a half, I fell in love with the city! And I knew that I had to return, the next time with a client. I stood between the magical trees at the Jardin du Luxembourg and committed myself to this goal.

Maggie

Ultimately, my dream sessions will be the same as my typical portrait sessions, but the client's investment will cover travel and accommodations for both of us. I knew that this would be a hard (if not impossible) sell without images to back up the experience, so I realized that I needed a client who was already interested in hiring me, and then I would throw in the experience of a lifetime to go with it: a trip to Paris!

I put it out there on my Instagram and (my now client) Maggie reached out to me privately. She said two words: pick me! And I did.

It wasn't hard, honestly. I needed somebody who already wanted to hire me, who was already interested in my imagery and adored my product offerings...and who was truly enthusiastic about this one of a kind experience! Like with all of my clients, I met Maggie for a portrait consultation. We talked things over and before we knew it, a plan to get to Paris started taking shape!

Dress-up!

A big focus from the beginning for me was wardrobe. In fact, I have been building my collection of wardrobe since I began my business. And it all started with the dreamy tulle skirt seen here:

Denver-Portrait-Photographer-Mark-Ross-Photography-Ciara-Sexton-Riverdance

My collection has grown a lot over the last few years and my clients always appreciate it, as they often have no idea what to wear once they decide on having their portrait taken. The thing is, I knew that the bar was being raised since we were going to Paris. So that's exactly where I started: The Bar Suit.

Vogue 1947

Vogue 1947

The Bar Suit changed the shape of fashion, literally and figuratively.

The Bar Suit changed the shape of fashion, literally and figuratively.

In 1947, Christian Dior debuted his first fashion collection in Paris. Up until that time in the 1940's, women's fashions were plain and rather boxy, due to war rations. Dior changed all of that. He created what was deemed "The New Look", and it started with an outfit called the Bar Suit. An ivory jacket made of silk and a black pleated skirt made from wool, it appears quite simple at first glance. But what it did was dramatically accentuate a woman's curves. It was the beginning of bringing femininity and elegance back into fashion.

Curvy-Line2-gold.png

Shortly after setting my goal to get back to Paris...and after confirming Maggie's interest...I contacted an incredibly talented dressmaker who specializes in vintage-inspired outfits. Although many people have never heard of the Bar Suit, most people who work in fashion have heard endless things about it. Charlene (the dressmaker) said that she had always wanted to produce a Dior-inspired Bar Suit and she agreed to do it for me! The first step of her process was careful research. Researching how it was made (it appears very simple at first glance, but it's very complex in its construction), as well as sourcing fabric that was true to the original.

Endless fittings

As I waited patiently for Charlene to begin and eventually complete the tedious work on the Bar Suit, I started looking for other garments. Some were super expensive and some were cheap but looked expensive. And some were...well, cheap and looked cheap!!! I tried to be smart when picking wardrobe. It needed to photograph well and it needed to be able to be reused for future clients. And, most importantly, Maggie needed to feel beautiful in everything she was photographed in. Because more than anything, I want my clients to feel more empowered than they have in a long time once they see their final images. It is my "why"...my reason for running my business. There is nothing like seeing a client in joyful tears at her viewing session, saying that she cannot believe it is really her on the screen!

I found lots of options for clothes, some of which I felt conflicted over. That's when I started putting up polls on my Facebook page, to get other people's opinions. I was FLOORED with the number of people who wanted to contribute (thank you!!!) and truly read every comment and vote. I ordered a few of the outfits that people voted on...some I fell in love with upon arrival...some went immediately back in the box, like this one.

This dress was supposed to be blue. Upon opening, we all agreed that it was gray. As it was also a bit lifeless in shape, It was sent back.

Maggie was a trooper, coming multiple times for fittings...but each and every time I saw her getting more and more excited as Paris drew near!

Take the Swarovski away from the gay

A couple of the outfits that arrived were pretty, but a bit plain. Luckily, my fiancé Martin is from the world of Irish Dance. At any given point, he's within an arm's length of a bag of Swarovski crystals and E6000 glue. I'm just kidding! Mostly.

Earlier this week I decided to try my hand at what I can only call Swarovskiing. Oh my God, it was like it made the outfits come to life!!! And oh my God, it's tons of work.

The Bar Suit

Although it was months ago that I set my intention to photograph a client in Paris, the time truly started to fly once I committed to the vision. And suddenly I looked up and it was already August! With Paris just a few weeks away, I still had no Bar Suit. I didn't want to rush the dressmaker's work...but it was also shipping from overseas and it was not done, yet. Other outfits...too many...had arrived to my office. But not the outfit that I had my heart set on.
